A Stealthy Adjustment
Xiaomi has quietly adjusted the pricing of the Xiaomi Pad 8 across its Indian storefronts, implementing a flat increase that affects every available configuration of the device. While the company hasn’t issued a formal press release explaining the shift, the change is visible across major retail channels, where the tablet is now listed at a premium compared to its March launch figures.
The price hike is a uniform Rs. 2,000 increase. For the base model, which features 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, the price has climbed from its introductory Rs. 33,999 to a current retail price of Rs. 35,999. The higher-tier variant—boasting 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage—has seen a similar jump, moving from Rs. 36,999 to Rs. 38,999.
This adjustment extends beyond the standalone hardware. The bundle that includes the Xiaomi Focus Pen Pro, intended to position the Pad 8 as a productivity tool for students and professionals, has also been bumped. That package now retails for Rs. 43,999, up from the previous Rs. 41,999.
The Hardware Equation
To understand why Xiaomi feels it can maintain or increase margins on the Pad 8, one has to look at the silicon. The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 SoC, a chip designed to bridge the gap between flagship performance and efficiency. This puts the Pad 8 in a precarious but powerful spot in the Indian tablet market, where it competes not just with other Android slabs but with the long-tail appeal of the iPad Air series.
The visual experience is anchored by an 11.2-inch display with a 3.2K resolution. With a 144Hz refresh rate, the tablet is heavily marketed toward users who prioritize fluid scrolling and high-fidelity media consumption. This display, combined with a substantial 9,200mAh battery, suggests Xiaomi is targeting the “prosumer”—users who want more than a media tablet but aren’t ready to spend the premium for a full-fledged laptop replacement.
Market Positioning and the ‘Silent’ Hike
Price fluctuations in the Indian tech market are not uncommon, but they usually follow a specific pattern: deep discounts during festive sales followed by a slow climb back to MSRP. A direct price increase shortly after launch is a different signal. It often suggests a shift in component costs or a strategic pivot to increase the Average Selling Price (ASP) as the product settles into its lifecycle.
Currently, the Pad 8 sits in a competitive bracket where a Rs. 2,000 difference can be the deciding factor for a buyer. By raising the floor to Rs. 35,999, Xiaomi is pushing the device further into the mid-to-high range, potentially narrowing the gap between its mid-range offerings and its top-tier professional tablets.
The 45W fast charging support and the 13-megapixel rear camera remain standard across the board, meaning consumers are paying more for the exact same hardware specifications they could have accessed four months ago. For those already in the Xiaomi ecosystem, the Focus Pen Pro integration remains a strong selling point, but the increased cost of the bundle may make the standalone tablet a more attractive, if less productive, option.
