The Countdown to Vice City Officially Begins

After a decade of silence and a series of cautious delays, the industry’s most anticipated piece of software is finally moving into its commercial phase. Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI will open on June 25, marking the first tangible step toward the game’s expected launch on November 19, 2026.

The announcement, delivered via official channels and accompanied by the unveiling of the game’s cover art, ends months of speculation regarding when consumers could actually put money down for the title. For Rockstar, the timing is critical. The project has already seen two significant delays—initially slated for 2025, then pushed to May 2026, before finally landing in late autumn. This caution is typical for Rockstar, a studio known for a perfectionist approach to world-building that often results in multi-year development cycles.

Platform Availability and the PC Gap

At launch, GTA VI is confirmed for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. While the gaming community remains hopeful for a PC version, Rockstar is sticking to its historical playbook: leading with console exclusivity to maximize early sales and stability before porting to Windows. There is currently no official word on support for Nintendo’s rumored next-generation hardware, which would likely be too late to coincide with the November launch.

The most contentious point of discussion, however, is the price tag. While $70 has become the industry standard for AAA releases, analysts suggest Rockstar may push the envelope further. Speculation has swirled around a potential $80 or even $100 price point, citing the unprecedented scale of the production. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick previously assured stakeholders that the experience would be offered at a “fair price,” but the recent precedent set by Nintendo’s higher-tier pricing for flagship titles on the Switch 2 suggests the market may be ready for a price hike on the most anticipated game of the decade.

A Modern Take on the Leonida Coast

The game shifts the action to the state of Leonida, a satirical mirror of Florida, with the iconic Vice City serving as its neon-soaked heart. Unlike the 1980s nostalgia of the original GTA: Vice City, this iteration is firmly rooted in the modern era. The map promises an expansive mix of urban density, sprawling swamplands, and coastal highways, designed to leverage the power of current-gen hardware.

The narrative introduces a dual-protagonist system featuring Jason and Lucia, a criminal couple whose relationship drives the story. The plot opens with Jason picking up Lucia from the Leonida Penitentiary, kicking off a series of heists aimed at improving their standing in the criminal underworld. While this echoes the multi-character setup of GTA V, sources indicate a deeper RPG integration, allowing players to customize their characters’ physical attributes through diet and exercise—a level of detail that suggests a more immersive simulation than previous entries.

The $10 Billion Question: GTA Online

The most significant business challenge facing Rockstar isn’t the single-player campaign, but the transition of its online ecosystem. Since 2013, GTA Online has become a financial juggernaut, generating nearly $10 billion in revenue. The inevitable launch of a new version of the online experience—built on a new engine and the Leonida map—creates a complex dilemma.

Millions of players have invested thousands of hours and significant real-world currency into digital assets within the current version of GTA Online. How Rockstar handles the migration of these assets, or if they choose to start from a clean slate, will likely determine the long-term player retention of the new title. While the studio hasn’t detailed the transition plan, the economic stakes make a seamless migration nearly mandatory for maintaining its dominant market position.
