The platform has officially unveiled Nitro Rewards, a new layer of incentives designed to give paying users access to third-party offers from gaming and lifestyle brands at no additional cost. The headline addition is a partnership with Microsoft, granting eligible subscribers access to the base tier of Xbox Game Pass.
For years, Discord has balanced a delicate tightrope: maintaining a free-to-use experience that doesn’t alienate its massive user base while finding a sustainable way to monetize. Nitro, the platform’s premium tier, has traditionally focused on quality-of-life improvements—think larger file uploads (up to 500 MB), HD streaming, and granular profile customization. However, as the digital subscription market becomes increasingly crowded, simple “feature unlocks” may no longer be enough to prevent churn.
According to Stanislav Vishnevskiy, Discord’s co-founder and CTO, the goal is to augment the experience without creating a tiered class system that degrades the core utility for free users. “Nitro has always been about how we can meaningfully upgrade the Discord experience, but not limit it in any large way,” Vishnevskiy noted. Those on the more affordable Nitro Basic plan ($2.99 per month) are excluded from these perks, creating a sharper divide between the entry-level paid experience and the full premium tier.
The inclusion of Xbox Game Pass is a calculated move to anchor Discord more firmly into the gaming ecosystem. The base tier provides access to a curated library of over 50 PC and Xbox titles, including staples like Fallout 4 and Stardew Valley, alongside 10 hours of cloud gaming. For a gamer already paying for Discord, the ability to rotate through a library of titles essentially turns Discord into a gaming portal, not just a communication tool.

From a corporate perspective, this is less about “thanking” users and more about the mathematics of LTV (Lifetime Value). Nitro remains the primary engine of Discord’s revenue growth. In an era where users are auditing their monthly subscriptions, bundling a service like Game Pass makes the $9.99 price point significantly more palatable.
This evolution comes as Discord continues to transition from a niche “gamer’s chat room” into a generalized community infrastructure. With over 90 million daily active users, the platform now hosts everything from AI research collectives and crypto DAOs to local hobbyist groups. However, this scale brings significant regulatory headwinds.
