However, at Computex 2026, the company signaled a decisive return to the mainstream tablet segment with the unveiling of the Asus Pad. This isn’t a budget entry point; it is a calculated attempt to carve out a niche between high-end media consumption and light productivity.
The timing is notable. By launching with Android 16, Asus is positioning the device to take full advantage of Google’s latest kernel optimizations for large-screen devices. The hardware choices suggest a device intended for “prosumers”—those who find the base-model iPads underpowered for multitasking but don’t need the full thermal overhead of a laptop.
The Dual-Layer OLED Advantage
The centerpiece of the Asus Pad is undoubtedly its 12.2-inch display. While many competitors have settled on standard OLED or Mini-LED, Asus has opted for a 2.8K (2,800×1,840) dual-layer OLED panel. This technology, which typically utilizes a secondary layer to enhance brightness without compromising the deep blacks inherent to OLED, allows the device to hit 600 nits of typical brightness while maintaining a 144Hz refresh rate.

Interestingly, Asus has bypassed the expected Qualcomm Snapdragon 8-series in favor of the MediaTek Dimensity 8300. While the 8300 is technically a “sub-flagship” chip, it offers a compelling power-to-efficiency ratio that likely helps Asus keep the device thin while maintaining stability under load. This chipset choice aligns with a broader trend of manufacturers seeking alternatives to the Snapdragon monopoly to manage costs and thermal throttling.

The inclusion of “Circle to Search” and native Gemini integration indicates a deep partnership with Google to ensure the tablet doesn’t just feel like a large phone.

This suggests that Asus doesn’t see the Pad as a standalone replacement for a laptop, but rather as a companion device within a larger Windows-Android hybrid workflow.
While the hardware specifications are impressive, the critical missing piece is the price. Asus has not yet disclosed the MSRP or the specific regions for the initial rollout.
