A New Contender in the Upper-Midrange Segment

Motorola is preparing for a significant push in the Indian market with the upcoming debut of the Edge 70 Pro+, scheduled for release on June 4. While the company has spent the last few weeks cautiously teasing the device’s aesthetic and camera hardware, a recent appearance on Geekbench has stripped away the mystery regarding what actually powers the device.

The listing reveals that the Edge 70 Pro+ is sporting an octa-core MediaTek chipset identified as the MT6899. While Motorola hasn’t officially confirmed the naming, the MT6899 identifier is widely associated with the Dimensity 8500. This puts the device in a precarious but interesting position: it’s targeting a performance bracket that bridges the gap between standard mid-range efficiency and flagship-grade power, a territory currently contested by the Snapdragon 7+ Gen series.

    Breaking Down the Silicon

The clock speeds revealed in the benchmark suggest a sophisticated cluster arrangement designed for sustained performance. The chipset features a prime core hitting 3.40GHz, supported by three performance cores clocked at 3.20GHz, and four efficiency cores at 2.20GHz. This configuration is paired with an ARM Mali-G720 MC8 GPU, which should provide a competent gaming experience, though it likely won’t challenge the top-tier Adreno GPUs found in the Ultra-series devices.

In terms of raw numbers, the Edge 70 Pro+ clocked a single-core score of 1,722 and a multi-core score of 5,623. While these numbers are respectable, they suggest that the “Pro+” moniker is more about the feature set and camera capabilities than raw processing dominance. Interestingly, the device was spotted with 11.18GB of usable RAM, which almost certainly translates to a marketed 12GB LPDDR5 configuration.

    The Android 16 Anomaly

One of the most curious details in the leak is the mention of Android 16. Given that Android 15 is the current frontier for most manufacturers, a reference to version 16 suggests that Motorola might be using internal developer builds or a very early preview for testing. If this holds true, it could signal a shift in how Motorola manages its software rollout cycles, though it’s more likely a quirk of the benchmarking environment or a specific internal firmware version.

    Optical Ambitions: The Camera Stack

Hardware isn’t the only area where Motorola is swinging for the fences. The Edge 70 Pro+ is confirmed to feature a triple-camera array that focuses heavily on versatility. The primary sensor is a 50-megapixel Sony LYT-710, a modern sensor known for better light intake and efficiency compared to older IMX variants. This is supported by 3.5-degree optical image stabilization (OIS), which is critical for the low-light performance Motorola is targeting.

The real standout, however, is the 50-megapixel periscope telephoto lens. By utilizing a folded optic design, Motorola is claiming digital zoom capabilities of up to 50x. While digital zoom at that level often results in a “painterly” loss of detail, the inclusion of a high-resolution periscope sensor indicates a serious attempt to compete with the zoom capabilities of the Samsung S-series and Google Pixel Pro models.

With the June 4 launch date looming, the Edge 70 Pro+ appears to be a calculated attempt to capture the “premium-but-not-flagship” buyer—someone who wants a high-end camera and a sleek design without paying the $1,000+ tax associated with the absolute fastest chips on the market.
