Leaked Benchmarks Point to Surface Laptop 8 With Intel Panther Lake Chips

A slip in the benchmarks
Microsoft usually keeps its hardware roadmap under tight wraps, but a pair of Geekbench 6 listings have provided a rare glimpse into the next iteration of the Surface Laptop. The leaks, first spotted by Mashable and documented via screenshots by Notebookcheck, explicitly identify a device as the “Microsoft Corporation Surface Laptop for Business 13.8in 8th Ed Intel.”
The listings were scrubbed from Primate Labs’ database by Thursday morning, but not before revealing the internals of a machine that seems designed to challenge the current efficiency lead held by Apple’s M-series silicon. The leaked device is powered by a high-end Intel Core Ultra X7 368H processor, paired with Arc B390 graphics and 32GB of RAM. This indicates that Microsoft is leaning heavily into Intel’s upcoming “Panther Lake” architecture for its enterprise-focused hardware.
Performance and the ‘Business’ divide
Based on the captured data, the Core Ultra X7 368H performs competitively with the slightly lower-tier X7 358H and holds its own against the M5 MacBook Air in multi-core workloads, such as heavy video rendering. This puts Microsoft in a position to offer professional-grade power in a thin-and-light chassis, though the specific naming convention—”Surface Laptop for Business”—suggests a continuing bifurcated strategy.
For the current generation, Microsoft split the Surface Laptop 7 into two distinct lanes: consumer models powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon X series processors (launched May 2024) and high-end enterprise versions utilizing Intel Core Ultra Series 2 chips (arriving January 2025). This separation allowed Microsoft to capture the ARM-based efficiency trend while maintaining x86 compatibility for corporate environments that rely on legacy software.
A potential shift in release timing
The appearance of the 8th Edition Intel variant suggests that Microsoft may be flipping its launch cadence. While the Snapdragon models previously led the charge, reports from Windows Central indicate that Intel-based Surface Laptops and Pros could arrive as early as this spring. This would leave the consumer-facing Snapdragon X2 variants for a later summer release, a move likely driven by anticipated supply constraints surrounding Qualcomm’s next-gen silicon.
Beyond the processor, the rumors point to an iterative but welcome design refresh. While the chassis is expected to remain largely the same, sources suggest new colorways and significantly improved haptics. Most notably, there is talk of an optional OLED display, a feature that has become a baseline requirement for premium 13-inch laptops in 2026.
The cost of components
This leak arrives at a tense moment for Surface owners. Earlier this month, Microsoft implemented price increases across its current lineup, which the company attributed to “recent increases in memory and component costs.” If the Surface Laptop 8 incorporates premium OLED panels and high-bin Panther Lake chips, consumers and IT procurement managers should expect these prices to climb further.
When asked for a formal response regarding the Geekbench leaks, a Microsoft representative declined to provide specifics, stating, “Microsoft has nothing further to share at this time.”
