Spotify Turns to ElevenLabs to Lower the Barrier for AI-Generated Audiobooks

The Friction of the Recording Booth

For decades, the leap from a finished manuscript to a published audiobook was a financial and logistical bottleneck. Between hiring professional narrators, booking studio time, and the grueling process of editing raw audio, many independent authors simply priced themselves out of the audio market. Spotify is betting that generative AI can dismantle that barrier entirely.

During its recent Investor Day, Spotify announced a new AI-powered creation tool integrated directly into the Spotify for Authors platform. Powered by ElevenLabs, the tool allows writers to convert text into high-fidelity audiobooks using synthetic voices that aim to mimic the nuance and cadence of human speech. The feature is slated for a beta launch this June on an invite-only basis, initially supporting English.

    Strategic Flexibility Over Exclusivity

In a move that differentiates it from the more walled-garden approaches of some legacy publishers, Spotify is not requiring exclusivity. Authors using the ElevenLabs-powered tool remain the owners of their content and are free to distribute their AI-generated audiobooks on other platforms. This openness is likely a strategic play to attract a larger volume of creators to the Spotify for Authors ecosystem without the friction of restrictive contracts.

This integration marks an evolution of a previous partnership where authors simply uploaded existing ElevenLabs content to Spotify. By embedding the tool directly into the author’s workflow, Spotify is shifting from a distribution hub to a production house. While Spotify previously collaborated with Google Play Books for digitally narrated content, the pivot toward ElevenLabs signals a demand for more expressive, less “robotic” voice models that can handle the emotional weight of long-form storytelling.

    Scaling the Audiobook Vertical

The push into AI narration isn’t happening in a vacuum. Spotify is aggressively scaling its audiobook business to diversify its revenue beyond music and podcasts. The company has already grown its library to 700,000 titles and is seeing a 60% year-on-year increase in listening hours. More tellingly, over half of its current audiobook listeners only joined the platform within the last year, suggesting a massive untapped appetite for the medium.

The financial stakes are becoming clear. Spotify reports that its Audiobook+ subscriptions have surpassed one million users, putting the platform on a trajectory to generate $100 million in annualized recurring revenue. To sustain this growth, the company is expanding its author platform to support 10 additional languages—including French, German, and several Nordic dialects—and is planning to expand Audiobook+ plans to include students and families later this year.

    Changing the Discovery Engine

Beyond production, Spotify is tweaking how users actually find these books. The company is introducing natural language queries, allowing users to ask questions to discover books rather than relying on rigid keyword searches. Furthermore, the existing prompt-based playlist feature, which currently handles music and podcasts, will expand to include audiobooks this summer.

By integrating books into the same algorithmic discovery loop as a favorite playlist or a trending podcast, Spotify is attempting to normalize audiobooks as a casual, daily habit rather than a destination-based purchase. The synergy between ElevenLabs’ synthetic voices and Spotify’s discovery engine could potentially flood the market with a new wave of mid-list and indie titles that previously would have never seen the light of a recording studio.
