Xiaomi Bridges the Ecosystem Gap: HyperOS 3 Brings AirDrop Compatibility to Android

A crack in the walled garden
For years, the friction between iOS and Android has been most apparent not in the apps we use, but in how we move data between devices. While cloud services like Google Drive and Dropbox have served as intermediaries, the lack of a native, high-speed wireless transfer protocol between the two giants has remained a primary pain point for users in mixed-device households. Xiaomi is now attempting to dissolve that barrier.
The company has announced that its latest software overhaul, HyperOS 3, officially introduces AirDrop compatibility. This isn’t a standalone app or a third-party workaround; rather, it is an integration within Android’s Quick Share framework. By leveraging the underlying protocols that Apple uses for its proprietary sharing system, Xiaomi users can now beam photos, videos, and documents directly to iPhones and iPads without the usual dance of emailing files to oneself or relying on messaging apps that compress image quality.
The technical shift to Quick Share
The integration is part of a broader trend within the Android ecosystem to standardize file sharing. Google’s merger of Nearby Share and Quick Share was the first step in creating a unified pipeline. Now, that pipeline is extending beyond the Android perimeter. Xiaomi’s implementation, based on the latest Android 16 build, allows the device to essentially “speak” the language of AirDrop when a compatible Apple device is detected in the vicinity.
While Xiaomi has confirmed that the recently launched 14T Pro is among the first to receive this functionality, the rollout is expected to expand across a wider range of flagship models as HyperOS 3 matures. This move puts Xiaomi in direct company with Samsung and Oppo, both of whom have been aggressively experimenting with cross-platform interoperability to make their devices more attractive to former iPhone users.
Why this matters for the ecosystem
On the surface, this is a convenience feature. However, from a strategic perspective, it represents a significant shift in how Android OEMs view the “ecosystem lock-in.” Historically, the goal was to keep users within a single brand’s orbit. But as the market saturates, the value proposition is shifting toward flexibility. By making the transition from iOS to Xiaomi (or vice versa) frictionless, Xiaomi reduces the psychological and technical cost of switching hardware.
This development also highlights a subtle shift in Apple’s own approach. While Apple rarely announces support for Android-based protocols, the increasing prevalence of these features suggests a tacit acceptance that the mobile world is moving toward a more open, interoperable standard—likely driven by regulatory pressures in the EU and the global demand for a more open digital economy.
Performance and limitations
Users should note that while the connection is “native,” the speed and reliability of these transfers will still depend on the hardware’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities. Because this is an implementation via Quick Share, the discovery process is handled by Google’s framework, which then handshakes with Apple’s AirDrop protocol. This means that for the best experience, both devices need to have their wireless radios active and be within close proximity.
For those already on the HyperOS 3 beta or owning the 14T Pro, the feature is accessible through the standard sharing menu. Once a file is selected, the device scans for nearby targets, and Apple devices should now appear alongside other Android phones, effectively treating an iPhone as just another compatible endpoint in the network.
