    Pre-dawn Escalation in Thessaloniki

A series of coordinated firebomb attacks struck the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki early Wednesday morning, resulting in one fatality and several injuries. The attacks, which occurred between 4:00 a.m. and 4:45 a.m., specifically targeted the residences of members of the governing conservative New Democracy party.

According to local authorities, the perpetrators utilized crude explosive devices constructed from camping gas canisters. While three separate apartment buildings were targeted, the most severe damage and casualties occurred during the final strike, where multiple cars and motorcycles were set ablaze in a residential area.

Among the targets was the home of Afroditi Nestora, a parliamentary candidate for the New Democracy party. While Nestora sustained burn injuries during the chaos, the tragedy escalated when her mother later died in an intensive care unit from severe burns. Two other residents of the building were also hospitalized as a result of the blast and subsequent fires.

    Political Fallout and State Response

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who leads the New Democracy party, traveled to Thessaloniki on Wednesday afternoon to visit the victims in the hospital. In a written statement, Mitsotakis condemned the acts as “blind violence in public life,” signaling a hardline approach to the perpetrators.

“The blood spilled and division sown by the extremes will no longer be tolerated,” Mitsotakis stated, framing the incident not as isolated vandalism but as a direct assault on the state. “The legitimacy of the State and the unity of society must now cast terrorism to where it belongs: the margins!”

The Prime Minister linked the current stability of Greece’s economic resurgence to its ability to overcome internal divisions, suggesting that such political violence threatens the country’s trajectory of recovery and growth.

    A Pattern of Militant Violence

While the fatality marks a grim escalation, attacks by shadowy militant groups against symbols of power and government officials are not unprecedented in Greece. These groups frequently target the property of politicians, police officers, and members of the judiciary, though most such incidents result in property damage rather than loss of life.

Recent history highlights a persistent trend of urban guerrilla-style tactics in the region. In July 2025, a bomb detonated outside the Thessaloniki home of the president of Greece’s association of prison guards, leaving two people injured by shattered glass. Similarly, in June 2024, a police officer guarding the residence of a high-ranking judge in Athens was injured in a gasoline-based bomb attack.

    Calls for Accountability

The New Democracy party has responded with a mixture of defiance and accusation. Konstantinos Kyranakis, the party’s political committee secretary, described the events as a “proper terrorist attack” and alleged that the intent of the attackers was specifically to kill.

Kyranakis also used the moment to pivot toward a broader critique of Greek political culture, suggesting that those who have historically fostered a “culture of tolerance” toward political violence must now face their responsibilities in the wake of this tragedy.

Greek security forces have launched a full-scale investigation into the attacks, focusing on the procurement of the gas canisters and surveillance footage from the Thessaloniki residential districts. As of Wednesday evening, no arrests have been officially announced, but the government has vowed to identify the cells responsible for the coordination of the three strikes.
