OnePlus is reportedly prepping a compact OLED tablet for India to fill a critical gap in its lineup

    Filling the small-tablet void

For years, the Android tablet market has been bifurcated into two extremes: massive, laptop-replacement slabs and budget-friendly, underpowered media tablets. OnePlus has largely played into the former, recently launching the Pad 4 in India with a sprawling 13.2-inch 3.4K LCD. While the Pad 4 serves as a productivity powerhouse, it lacks the portability required for one-handed reading or gaming on the go.

That gap is reportedly about to be closed. According to a series of leaks from tipster Abhishek Yadav (@yabhishekhd), OnePlus is preparing to launch a compact tablet in India featuring an OLED display—a significant departure from the LCD panels found in the Pad 4 and the mid-range Pad Go 2.

    The Oppo Connection

The specifications surfacing online suggest that this isn’t a ground-up design. The leaked hardware profile is nearly identical to the Oppo Pad Mini, a device that has already generated buzz in other markets. Given the deep corporate integration between OnePlus and Oppo under the BBK Electronics umbrella, a rebranding strategy is the most likely scenario. While Yadav hasn’t explicitly confirmed it is a rebadge, the overlap in display size and internals is too precise to be coincidental.

The rumored device is expected to feature an 8.8-inch OLED panel. This is a sweet spot for users who find the iPad Mini’s form factor appealing but want the deeper blacks and infinite contrast ratios that only OLED can provide. To keep the experience fluid, the display is slated for a 144Hz refresh rate, matching the flagship standards set by the larger Pad 4.

Performance and the Android 16 Question

If the leaks hold true, the performance ceiling for this compact tablet is remarkably high. The device is reportedly powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset, paired with LPDDR5x RAM and UFS 4.1 storage. Putting a top-tier flagship SoC into an 8.8-inch chassis effectively turns the device into a handheld gaming beast, potentially competing with high-end gaming tablets and the niche but growing market of handheld PCs.

Perhaps most surprising is the software claim. The leaks suggest the tablet will ship with Android 16 in India. Given that Android 15 is the current focus for Google and OEMs, this would indicate either a very late 2025 release window or a strategic decision by OnePlus to launch the device as a showcase for the next generation of Google’s mobile OS.

Strategic positioning in the Indian market

The move to bring a compact OLED tablet to India is a calculated risk. The Indian tablet market is heavily skewed toward budget education tablets and high-end iPads. By introducing a high-spec, small-form factor device, OnePlus is targeting the ‘prosumer’—users who want a secondary device for reading, digital sketching, or gaming that doesn’t require a backpack to transport.

By pivoting to OLED, OnePlus is also addressing a long-standing criticism of the Pad series: the lack of true blacks in dark-mode content. An 8.8-inch OLED screen would make this one of the most competitive small Android tablets ever released, especially if priced aggressively against the iPad Mini.

While OnePlus has not officially commented on the leak, the timing aligns with their aggressive expansion in the Indian wearables and tablet space. If the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 integration is accurate, we are looking at more than just a ‘mini’ tablet—it’s a compact powerhouse.
