Sony synchronizes June gaming lineup with World Cup fever

Sony has officially unveiled the PS Plus Essential lineup for June 2026, and it is a collection defined by multiplayer chaos and a rare scheduling anomaly. The marquee addition is Grounded: Fully Yoked Edition, bringing Obsidian Entertainment’s shrunk-down survival experience to both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. The “Fully Yoked” version serves as the definitive edition of the title, integrating all previous updates and endgame content into a single package.

However, the most interesting detail in this month’s announcement isn’t a new addition, but a refusal to leave. EA Sports FC 26, which was originally part of the May rotation, will remain available for subscribers until June 16. This extended residency is a transparent play by Sony and EA to capitalize on the global surge of interest surrounding the FIFA World Cup. While PS Plus games typically swap out on a strict monthly cadence, this mid-month exit suggests a tactical shift in how Sony manages its Essential tier to align with real-world cultural events.

A diverse spread of multiplayer mayhem

Rounding out the June offerings are two starkly different titles: Warhammer 40,000: Darktide and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2. While the genres vary wildly—from the grimdark corridors of a hive city to the colorful combat of cartoon icons—the common thread is a heavy emphasis on cooperative and competitive multiplayer.

The inclusion of Darktide provides a high-intensity first-person shooter experience that tests the PS5’s capabilities, while All-Star Brawl 2 targets the platform-fighter demographic, offering a more accessible entry point for casual gamers. Together with Grounded, the June lineup leans heavily into “social gaming,” reflecting a broader trend where subscription services prioritize titles that keep users engaged with friends rather than solitary single-player journeys.

The transition from May to June

For those who haven’t yet claimed the May titles, the window is closing rapidly. Nine Sols and WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers will exit the service on June 1, 2026. Unlike FC 26, these titles are adhering to the standard expiration date, meaning users have only a few days to add them to their libraries before they vanish.

The new June titles will officially become available for download on June 2, 2026. This rollout coincides with the start of the Days of Play sale on May 27, as Sony looks to drive hardware and software sales through a combination of deep discounts and high-value subscription additions.

    Shifting the subscription strategy

The decision to extend FC 26’s availability is more than just a courtesy to football fans; it’s an experiment in flexibility. For years, the PS Plus Essential rotation has been a rigid conveyor belt of content. By breaking this pattern for a global event like the World Cup, Sony is signaling that it may be more willing to treat the Essential tier as a dynamic storefront rather than a static monthly bundle.

Whether this leads to more “event-based” extensions in the future remains to be seen, but for now, it ensures that the world’s most popular sport has a low barrier to entry during its most critical month of the year.
