A Battle for the 7th District

The race for New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District just became one of the most anticipated matchups of the upcoming midterms. Rebecca Bennett, a former US Navy helicopter pilot, has decisively won the Democratic primary, carving a path toward a general election showdown with Republican incumbent Tom Kean Jr.

Bennett secured victory with approximately 47.2% of the vote, comfortably distancing herself from her nearest rival, Tina Shah, who took 20.2%. Her win concludes a crowded Democratic field that included Brian Varela and Michael Roth, positioning her as the party’s primary challenger in a district that has become a political revolving door, changing party control twice in the last eight years.

    The Absent Incumbent

While Bennett celebrates her nomination, the Republican side of the ticket is grappling with an unfolding mystery regarding Tom Kean Jr.’s health. The congressman has missed more than 100 House votes since early March, citing an undisclosed illness. This prolonged absence from Washington has created a vacuum that Bennett is already leveraging as a primary campaign pillar.

Despite the gap in attendance, Kean navigated the Republican primary unopposed, buoyed by a strong endorsement from Donald Trump. The former president took to social media on the eve of the primary to signal his unwavering support, claiming Kean “will never let you down.” However, Kean’s own communications have been contradictory. On May 21, he suggested a return to in-person work within “a couple of weeks,” but a subsequent statement released just before polls closed on Tuesday indicated that his recovery might take longer than previously estimated.

A Campaign Built on Service and Economics

At her victory event in Somerville, Bennett didn’t mince words regarding Kean’s tenure. Labeling the congressman a “coward” for his lack of presence in Washington, she argued that the district is being left without effective representation. “You are failing us, and you do not deserve to represent us in Washington,” Bennett told her supporters.

Bennett is pivoting her military background toward a platform of economic stability. She has specifically targeted the intersection of foreign conflict and domestic cost-of-living, arguing that the economic ripples from the US-Israel war on Iran, compounded by Trump-era tariff legacies, are placing an unsustainable burden on working families. This strategy aligns with a broader Democratic effort to link geopolitical instability to rising grocery and gasoline prices—issues that resonate deeply in the 7th District’s mix of suburban hubs and rural farm towns.

    The Political Stakes

The 7th District is more than just a local contest; it is a critical piece of the puzzle for Democrats hoping to reclaim the House of Representatives. The area, which includes Trump’s Bedminster golf club, is a volatile battleground. In 2018, Democrat Tom Malinowski ousted Republican Leonard Lance; by 2022, Kean had flipped the seat back to the GOP.

Kean enters the race with significant political pedigree. As the son of former Governor Thomas Kean and a descendant of New Jersey’s first governor, William Livingston, he represents one of the state’s most established political dynasties. However, the district’s history of ousting incumbents during midterms suggests that pedigree may not be enough to overcome a well-funded challenge and questions surrounding his ability to perform the duties of the office.

Elsewhere in the state, the Democratic party saw further gains, with Analilia Mejia winning the nomination in the 11th District and LaMonica McIver securing the nod in the 10th District, signaling a coordinated push to shift the state’s congressional balance.
