A bet on durability in the budget segment

While the global smartphone market remains obsessed with foldable screens and generative AI, there is a persistent, high-volume demand for devices that simply refuse to break. Itel is leaning into this niche with the launch of the Itel Aqua in India, a feature phone designed specifically for environments where dust, water, and accidental drops are the primary concerns.

Priced at Rs. 1,799, the Aqua is positioned as part of Itel’s new Inno Series. The most significant selling point here isn’t the software or the speed—it’s the IP67 rating. For a device at this price point, a certified level of dust and water resistance is rare, suggesting Itel is targeting outdoor workers, rural demographics, and users who need a reliable secondary ‘backup’ phone that can survive a rainstorm or a dusty construction site.

    Modernizing the ‘Dumb’ Phone

One of the most surprising additions to the Aqua is the inclusion of USB Type-C charging. For years, feature phones have been the last stronghold of the proprietary micro-USB port. By switching to Type-C, Itel is acknowledging that even entry-level users are consolidating their cables as they move toward Android devices for their primary needs. This small change significantly improves the user experience, reducing the need to carry multiple chargers.

To tackle the audio quality issues common in cheap handsets, Itel has implemented AI Environmental Noise Cancellation (ENC). While the term ‘AI’ is often overused in current tech marketing, in the context of a feature phone, it usually refers to basic algorithmic filtering to suppress background wind or traffic noise during calls. Given the target audience’s likely use-case in loud outdoor environments, this is a practical inclusion rather than a gimmick.

    Hardware and Utility

The device is built around a 2.4-inch display. While small by modern standards, Itel claims the screen is optimized for outdoor visibility with enhanced brightness levels, preventing the common issue of ‘washout’ under direct sunlight. Under the hood, the company has remained tight-lipped about the specific processor and RAM, which is standard for the segment as these devices rely on lightweight, proprietary operating systems that don’t require significant compute power.

Storage is handled via a microSD slot supporting up to 32GB, which is ample for the device’s primary functions: storing local music files and recording wireless FM radio. The phone also supports 10 Indian languages, a critical localization move for capturing the diverse regional markets across the subcontinent.

    Market Positioning and Availability

The Itel Aqua enters a crowded market where brands like Nokia and Jio have a strong foothold. However, by focusing on the ‘rugged’ angle and incorporating a 1,200mAh battery—which should easily last several days on a single charge given the lack of a power-hungry OS—Itel is carve out a specific utility-first identity.

The phone is available in Blue, Red, and Black, and is currently being distributed through retail stores across India. By prioritizing physical retail over e-commerce for this specific model, Itel is meeting its target demographic where they actually shop.
