A Calculated Return to the Tablet Space

Asus has spent the better part of the last few years focusing its mobile energy on the ROG and Zenbook lines, largely leaving the standalone Android tablet market to Samsung and Lenovo. That silence ended abruptly at Computex 2026, where the company unveiled the Asus Pad—a high-performance slate that suggests Asus is no longer content to sit on the sidelines of the productivity-focused tablet war.

The Asus Pad isn’t trying to be a budget entry point. Instead, it arrives as a direct challenge to the premium tier, blending a high-refresh display with a chipset typically reserved for upper-midrange smartphones. By opting for the MediaTek Dimensity 8300, Asus is positioning the device in a specific niche: powerful enough for heavy multitasking and gaming, but likely more cost-effective than the Snapdragon 8-series alternatives found in the Galaxy Tab S line.

    The Dual-Layer OLED Advantage

The centerpiece of the device is undoubtedly the 12.2-inch display. Asus has equipped the Pad with a 2.8K (2,800×1,840) dual-layer OLED panel. While standard OLEDs are common in this price bracket, the dual-layer technology is a more sophisticated approach, allowing the screen to maintain a high peak brightness while reducing power consumption during static tasks.

With a 144Hz refresh rate and a 3:2 aspect ratio, the screen is clearly designed for more than just media consumption. The 3:2 ratio is a nod to productivity, providing more vertical real estate for documents and web browsing compared to the cinematic 16:9 or 16:10 ratios. According to official specs, the panel covers 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut with a typical brightness of 600 nits, making it a viable tool for creators and designers. Asus also highlighted TÜV Rheinland certification for flicker-free performance and blue light reduction, a necessary addition for a device intended for long work sessions.

Android 16 and the AI Ecosystem

Launching with Android 16, the Asus Pad is heavily integrated into the current AI-driven mobile landscape. The software suite includes Google Gemini and the ubiquitous ‘Circle to Search’ functionality, signaling a tight partnership with Google to ensure the tablet feels like a modern productivity hub rather than just a scaled-up phone.

On the hardware-software bridge, Asus is leaning on its existing ecosystem. The tablet supports the Asus Pen 2.0 and compatible Bluetooth keyboards, attempting to replicate the ‘laptop replacement’ experience. To further this, Asus has integrated GlideX, its cross-screen sharing solution, which allows users to extend their PC display to the tablet or control their computer remotely—a feature that could make the Pad a compelling companion for Zenbook owners.

    Endurance and Hardware

To power the high-refresh OLED and the Dimensity 8300, Asus has packed in a 9,000mAh battery. While the capacity is substantial, the real-world utility will depend on how Android 16 manages the 144Hz panel. Charging is handled via a 45W fast-charging system, which is respectable, though it trails behind some of the ultra-fast charging speeds seen in Chinese competitors.

Audio is handled by a quad-speaker array backed by Dolby Atmos, ensuring that the device remains competitive as a media consumption tool. Despite the impressive spec sheet, Asus remained tight-lipped about the global rollout. While the device was the star of the Computex showcase, specific pricing and regional availability for North American and European markets have yet to be confirmed.
