While the company typically adheres to a strict cadence of silicon upgrades and chassis refreshes, the next iterations of the Apple TV and HomePod mini are reportedly sitting in a state of readiness, waiting for a software catalyst to trigger their public debut.
According to Mark Gurman in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, the development phase for both devices concluded several months ago. The hardware is no longer in a prototyping stage; instead, these units are actively being utilized by employees at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters. This internal deployment suggests that the devices are functionally stable and production-ready, shifting the delay from an engineering hurdle to a strategic timing decision.
The Siri Dependency
The primary reason for the hold-up appears to be the ongoing overhaul of Siri. For years, the voice assistant has been the weakest link in the HomePod’s value proposition, often struggling with basic context or failing to execute complex smart home routines. With the introduction of Apple Intelligence, the company is attempting to pivot Siri from a basic command-and-control tool into a generative AI agent capable of on-screen awareness and nuanced conversation.
Launching new HomePod mini hardware with the legacy version of Siri would be a strategic misstep. By aligning the hardware launch with the rollout of the revamped AI features, Apple can market these devices not just as incremental speed bumps, but as the definitive hubs for a truly intelligent home. This synchronization ensures that the first user experience with the new hardware is tied directly to the “new” Siri, rather than a slightly faster version of the old one.
Closing the Silicon Gap
From a technical standpoint, the upgrades are long overdue. The current Apple TV, released in 2021 and updated in 2022, relies on the A15 Bionic chip. While still performant for 4K streaming and gaming, the leap to a newer SoC (System on a Chip) would provide the necessary neural engine overhead required to process local AI requests without relying entirely on the cloud.
The situation is even more dire for the HomePod mini. The current model is powered by the S5 processor—a chip that is now seven years old. In an era where smart speakers are increasingly expected to handle complex local automation and high-fidelity audio processing, the S5 is a significant liability. A move to a modern chip would likely improve response latency and potentially allow for better integration with the Matter and Thread protocols, which are central to Apple’s current home strategy.
What to Expect in the Box
Beyond the internal specs, reports suggest the Apple TV may debut a redesigned Siri Remote. While the current USB-C update addressed the charging grievance, Apple is rumored to be exploring a layout that better complements the AI-driven interface of the new tvOS.
The HomePod mini is expected to retain its compact form factor, but the internal hardware shift will be the story. If Apple manages to solve the latency issues that have plagued Siri’s interaction with third-party smart home devices, the new hardware will serve as the essential bridge for the ecosystem.
