Xiaomi pushes the envelope on budget display tech

Xiaomi has officially expanded its entry-level portfolio in China with the launch of the Redmi 17C. While the ‘C’ series has historically been the baseline for affordability, the 17C attempts to bridge the gap between ultra-budget hardware and the smoothness typically reserved for mid-range devices, most notably by integrating a 120Hz refresh rate into a sub-CNY 1,000 chassis.

The standout feature is the 6.88-inch HD+ display. While the resolution remains modest at 720×1,640 pixels, the jump to a 120Hz refresh rate is a strategic move to attract younger users who prioritize fluid scrolling and basic gaming. Xiaomi has also pushed the touch sampling rate to 240Hz, which, while not competitive for professional e-sports, provides a tactile responsiveness that was largely absent in the previous Redmi 15C.

To combat the eye strain associated with long-term screen use—a common pain point for the target demographic of students and digital laborers—the 17C carries TÜV Rheinland certifications for Low Blue Light and Flicker Free operation, alongside a ‘Circadian Friendly’ mode designed to adjust light output based on the time of day.

Performance and the Helio G81 Ultra

Under the hood, the Redmi 17C is powered by the MediaTek Helio G81 Ultra. This chipset is designed specifically for efficiency and stability in entry-level tasks rather than raw power. Paired with 4GB of RAM, the device isn’t meant for heavy multitasking or high-fidelity gaming, but it is optimized to handle the latest iteration of Xiaomi’s software ecosystem.

The device debuts with HyperOS 3, Xiaomi’s evolving operating system that seeks to unify the experience across smartphones, tablets, and IoT devices. Running a modern OS on 4GB of RAM is always a balancing act, and the efficiency of HyperOS 3 will be the real test of whether the 17C feels snappy or sluggish in daily use.

Energy density is where the 17C makes its most practical play. The phone houses a 5,160mAh battery, a slight bump over the standard 5,000mAh cells seen in most budget handsets. Given the lower resolution of the screen and the power-sipping nature of the G81 Ultra, the 17C should easily be a two-day device for light users. However, charging remains a bottleneck; 18W wired charging is supported, meaning users will likely spend over two hours tethered to a wall for a full charge.

    Market Positioning and Pricing

Xiaomi has priced the Redmi 17C to be aggressively competitive. The base model, featuring 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, starts at CNY 799 (approximately ₹12,000). For those requiring more headroom, a 128GB storage variant is available for CNY 899 (approximately ₹13,000). This pricing strategy places the 17C directly in the crosshairs of other budget players like Realme and Infinix, who have been fighting for dominance in the emerging markets segment.

Visually, the device moves away from the stark utilitarianism of previous C-series models. It is available in three distinct colorways: Black, Danxia Red, and Sea Breeze Blue. The inclusion of a 13-megapixel main rear camera ensures basic photography capabilities, though it lacks the versatility of wide-angle or macro lenses found in the higher-tier Redmi Note series.

By releasing the 17C as the successor to the Redmi 15C (which arrived in September 2025), Xiaomi is maintaining a rapid hardware cadence. The 17C isn’t trying to reinvent the budget phone; instead, it is refining the formula by adding a high-refresh-rate screen and a slightly larger battery, proving that even at the bottom of the price pyramid, there is still room for iterative improvement.
