Insta360 is traditionally tight-lipped about its product roadmap until the moment of a global launch, but a German retailer may have just spoiled the surprise. The company’s anticipated Luna Ultra gimbal camera has appeared on the website of Foto Erhardt, complete with a pre-order reservation system and a detailed specification sheet that suggests a significant leap in imaging hardware.

The listing allows customers to secure a unit via a €50 deposit, which will be credited toward the final purchase price. While Insta360 has not officially acknowledged the device, the presence of high-resolution product imagery and a structured spec list indicates that the Luna Ultra is likely in the final stages of its pre-launch cycle.

Bridging the Gap Between Action and Cinema

The most striking detail in the leak is the inclusion of a 1-inch image sensor paired with a Leica Summicron lens. For those unfamiliar with the optics, Summicron lenses are revered in the photography world for their sharpness and contrast, typically found in high-end Leica M-series cameras. Bringing this level of glass to a compact gimbal system signals that Insta360 is moving beyond the “action cam” niche and directly targeting professional creators and vloggers who currently rely on the DJI Pocket series or small mirrorless setups.

The sensor size is equally critical. A 1-inch sensor provides a substantial upgrade in light gathering and dynamic range over the smaller sensors found in standard action cameras, meaning the Luna Ultra should handle low-light environments and high-contrast scenes with significantly less noise and better highlight retention.

    Technical Capabilities and Video Specs

According to the Foto Erhardt listing, the Luna Ultra is not just about resolution, but professional flexibility. The camera is reportedly capable of 8K video recording, catering to the growing demand for high-resolution assets that can be cropped or reframed in post-production without losing detail. For those prioritizing motion smoothness, the device supports 4K capture at up to 120fps, making it a potent tool for high-quality slow-motion cinematography.

Perhaps more important for professional editors is the mention of 10-bit i-Log recording and dedicated Leica color profiles. By offering a logarithmic gamma curve, Insta360 is giving users the ability to preserve more detail in the shadows and highlights, providing the necessary headroom for a professional color grade in software like DaVinci Resolve or Adobe Premiere Pro.

    The Hardware Competition

The Luna Ultra arrives at a time when the “creator camera” segment is becoming increasingly crowded. By integrating a mechanical 3-axis gimbal stabilization system, Insta360 is doubling down on physical stabilization rather than relying solely on electronic stabilization (EIS), which often results in “cropping” the image and introducing digital artifacts during complex movements.

This puts the Luna Ultra in direct competition with the DJI Pocket 3, which dominated the market last year by introducing a larger sensor to a tiny form factor. If Insta360 can successfully marry 8K output with Leica’s optical pedigree and a reliable gimbal, they may capture the segment of the market that finds the Pocket 3 slightly too limited for cinema-grade work.

While we are still waiting for a confirmed price point and a global release date, the existence of a reservation system in Germany suggests a launch is imminent. If these specs hold true, the Luna Ultra isn’t just a refresh—it’s a statement of intent to own the high-end compact imaging market.
