    The Silicon Reveal

Motorola is ramping up the anticipation for its upcoming flagship rollout in India, but a recent appearance on Geekbench has stripped away some of the mystery surrounding the Edge 70 Pro+. While the company has spent the last few weeks teasing the device’s aesthetics and camera modules, the benchmarking data provides the first real look at the hardware driving the experience.

The listing identifies the handset as the Edge 70 Pro+, powered by a MediaTek SoC with the identifier MT6899. While Motorola hasn’t officially named the chip, industry trackers and internal identifiers link the MT6899 to the MediaTek Dimensity 8500. This suggests Motorola is leaning into a high-performance, sub-flagship silicon strategy, likely to keep the device competitive against rivals like the Oppo Reno 16, which is also expected to utilize this specific chipset.

The architecture revealed in the leak follows a modern octa-core configuration: four efficiency cores clocked at 2.20GHz, three performance cores hitting 3.20GHz, and a single prime core peaking at 3.40GHz. This setup is designed to balance aggressive multitasking with thermal efficiency, a perennial challenge for the Edge series’ slim chassis.

    Performance Metrics and Memory

In the Geekbench tests, the Edge 70 Pro+ posted a single-core score of 1,722 and a multi-core score of 5,623. While these numbers aren’t meant to beat the raw ceiling of a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, they place the device firmly in the upper-midrange to flagship-adjacent territory, ensuring it can handle demanding gaming and productivity apps without significant throttling.

The listing also confirms that the device is running with approximately 11.18GB of usable memory, which will almost certainly be marketed as 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM. Interestingly, there are hints that the device may be testing with Android 16. If this holds true, Motorola would be among the first to ship with the next iteration of Google’s OS, though it’s equally possible this is an internal developer build used for pre-launch optimization.

    A Periscope-Heavy Camera Strategy

Beyond the internals, Motorola’s own teasers have confirmed a heavy emphasis on optics. The Edge 70 Pro+ will feature a triple-camera array centered around a 50-megapixel primary sensor. Specifically, the use of the Sony LYT-710 sensor—coupled with 3.5-degree optical image stabilization (OIS)—indicates a move toward better low-light performance and more consistent exposure in handheld video.

The most aggressive hardware addition, however, is the 50-megapixel periscope telephoto lens. Motorola is claiming 50x digital zoom capabilities, a move that puts them in direct competition with the ‘Ultra’ tier of Samsung and Xiaomi devices. Periscope lenses allow for a longer focal length within the narrow depth of a smartphone, fundamentally changing how the device handles distant subjects.

    Market Positioning in India

The Edge 70 Pro+ is officially slated for an India launch on June 4. By pairing a highly capable MediaTek chip with premium camera hardware, Motorola appears to be targeting the ‘premium mid-range’ segment—users who want flagship-grade photography and speed without the $1,000+ price tag of a Fold or an Ultra device.

Whether the Dimensity 8500 can provide the sustained performance needed to justify the ‘Pro+’ moniker remains to be seen, but the initial benchmarks suggest a stable, powerful foundation for what looks to be Motorola’s most ambitious Edge device in recent years.
