Samsung Expands One UI 8.5 Rollout to Galaxy S23 and A-Series Devices

The Android 16 Transition Hits Older Hardware
Samsung has begun the global deployment of the stable One UI 8.5 update, extending the Android 16-based software beyond its initial launch window. While the update first appeared in South Korea earlier this month, it is now migrating to a broader array of hardware, including the Galaxy S23 series and the mid-range Galaxy A56 and A36 lineups.
The expansion marks a critical shift in Samsung’s software strategy. Typically, the most advanced AI capabilities are locked to the newest hardware—in this case, the Galaxy S26 series. However, the One UI 8.5 push is designed to bridge that gap, porting several high-end features to previous-generation devices to maintain their competitiveness in an increasingly AI-driven market.
Bridging the Generational Gap
The rollout follows a staggered release pattern. Last week, users in the US and Indian markets reported that the Galaxy S25 series had begun receiving the update. Now, a surge of user reports on X (formerly Twitter) confirms that the stable version is hitting the Galaxy S23 and S24 series, as well as the Galaxy Tab S11 tablets.
For S23 owners, this is more than a version bump. The update focuses heavily on optimizing the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to handle more complex on-device tasks that were previously reserved for the newer Snapdragon and Exynos chips found in the S25 and S26 lines. This includes refined generative AI tools for photo editing and more intuitive system-wide automation through the updated Android 16 core.
Mid-Range Momentum: Galaxy A36 and A56
Perhaps more surprising is the inclusion of the Galaxy A36 and A56 in this immediate rollout. Samsung’s A-series typically experiences a lag in software updates compared to the S-series flagships. By pushing One UI 8.5 to these devices simultaneously, Samsung is signaling a move toward a more unified software experience across its portfolio.
The A-series devices will benefit from the streamlined memory management introduced in Android 16, which aims to reduce background process lag—a common pain point for mid-range hardware. While these devices may not support the full suite of S26’s “Ultra” AI features due to hardware limitations, they are receiving a significant portion of the updated UI framework and security patches.
Deployment and Availability
As with most Samsung updates, the rollout is regional and gradual. Users can check for the update by navigating to Settings > Software update > Download and install. Some users in Europe and Southeast Asia have reported the update is still pending, which is standard for Samsung’s phased deployment to ensure stability across different carrier configurations.
The transition to Android 16 is fundamentally about efficiency. One UI 8.5 leverages the new OS’s ability to better manage power consumption during AI workloads, which should theoretically provide a slight bump in battery endurance for the S23 and Tab S11 series, provided the hardware isn’t already bottlenecked by battery degradation.
