A slip in the benchmark database

Microsoft is usually tight-lipped about its hardware roadmap, but a series of brief appearances on Geekbench 6 suggests the next iteration of the Surface Laptop is already undergoing rigorous performance testing. Two separate listings for a device identified as the “Microsoft Corporation Surface Laptop for Business 13.8in 8th Ed Intel” surfaced earlier this week before being scrubbed from Primate Labs’ public database.

The leak follows a familiar pattern in the tech industry: a developer or engineer likely ran a benchmark without a paid license key, which automatically uploads the results to the public cloud. While the listings were short-lived, screenshots captured by Notebookcheck and reported by Mashable provide a glimpse into the internals of what will likely be the Surface Laptop 8.

The most striking detail is the processor. The leaked unit is powered by the Intel Core Ultra X7 368H, part of the highly anticipated Panther Lake family. Paired with Arc B390 graphics and 32GB of RAM, the device represents a significant jump in integrated compute power. Early data shows the X7 368H performing on par with the Core Ultra X7 358H and showing competitive multi-core performance against Apple’s M5-series chips in heavy workloads like video rendering and complex multitasking.

When asked for clarification regarding the leak, a Microsoft representative declined to provide details, stating, “Microsoft has nothing further to share at this time.” This silence is typical for the company, but it coincides with an interesting pricing shift. Earlier this month, Microsoft implemented price hikes across its current Surface lineup, citing rising costs for memory and high-end components—a move that often precedes a generational transition.

    Strategic Pivot to Intel

The “For Business” designation in the leak is particularly telling. Since the launch of the Surface Laptop 7 in May 2024, Microsoft has leaned heavily into Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series for its consumer-facing AI PCs. However, the enterprise market remains deeply tethered to x86 architecture for legacy software compatibility. The current strategy involves releasing Snapdragon units for consumers first, followed by Intel-based enterprise models, as seen with the January 2025 arrival of Core Ultra Series 2 versions.

However, internal whispers and reports from Windows Central suggest Microsoft may invert this rollout for the 8th generation. There is growing evidence that Intel-based Surface Laptops and Pros could lead the charge this spring, with Snapdragon X2 variants arriving later in the summer. This shift could be a strategic response to supply chain volatility or a realization that the enterprise demand for Intel’s new architecture is outstripping the consumer appetite for ARM-based Windows.

    Refining the Chassis

While the internals are the star of the leak, the hardware envelope appears to be staying consistent. The 13.8-inch display remains the standard, but the 8th Edition is rumored to introduce a few quality-of-life improvements. These include updated haptic feedback for the trackpad, a fresh palette of colors, and, most importantly, the potential introduction of an optional OLED panel. The move toward OLED would bring the Surface Laptop into direct competition with the MacBook Air and Dell’s XPS line, addressing one of the few remaining criticisms of the current Surface display technology.
