Returning to the Roots of Survival Horror

After the high-octane action of the Resident Evil 4 remake, Capcom is pivoting back toward the claustrophobic tension of resource management. In a recent press roundtable following the game’s reveal at Summer Game Fest 2026, producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi addressed the primary concern haunting the community: the perspective. Despite the franchise’s recent trend toward first-person views in titles like RE7 and Village, Hirabayashi confirmed that Resident Evil Veronica will be a third-person experience.

Crucially, Hirabayashi noted that the gameplay loop will mirror the structure of the Resident Evil 2 remake. This means a shift away from the ‘action-horror’ hybrid and a return to a system where Claire Redfield’s survival depends on tight inventory control and strategic movement. “The gameplay base is going to be what you experienced playing as Claire Redfield in the remake of Resident Evil 2,” Hirabayashi stated, emphasizing a more resource-management-focused approach.

The ‘Code’ Paradox and Narrative Focus

One of the most immediate points of contention for longtime fans is the title change. The 2000 original was titled Code: Veronica, but the remake has dropped the prefix. This wasn’t a random branding shift, but a calculated move to align the game with the modern Resident Evil identity. Hirabayashi explained that the development team views the original as an essential entry, on par with the numbered titles, and decided that “Veronica” was the most potent word to emphasize for a modern audience.

The decision to tackle this specific entry now—despite it taking place chronologically before the events of RE4—stems from a desire to complete Claire Redfield’s character arc for the current generation. With Leon Kennedy’s journey having been recently refreshed, Capcom saw this as the ideal moment to let players experience Claire’s definitive struggle.

    Technical Evolution and ‘Reimagining’

While Capcom is sticking to the survival horror pillars, the term “reimagining” has appeared in official presentations, sparking speculation about new locations—including rumors of settings like Paris that weren’t in the original. While Hirabayashi declined to provide “gritty details,” he acknowledged that the team is looking at ways to make the game a “fresh experience” while respecting the original’s appeal.

The most significant technical leap, however, is the camera. The original Code: Veronica relied on fixed camera angles and early 3D transitions. By implementing a modern third-person camera, Capcom aims to create new opportunities for discovery and environmental storytelling that were simply impossible in 2000. This shift is expected to change how players interact with the game’s horror elements, moving from cinematic dread to a more immediate, intimate sense of vulnerability.

    Managing Legacy Expectations

The project is not without its pressures. Hirabayashi admitted to feeling a level of apprehension regarding the fanbase’s deep attachment to the original. The challenge for Capcom is balancing the “modern contrivances” of current hardware with the specific atmospheric dread that made the original a cult classic.

The remake is slated for a 2027 release across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, marking one of the most ambitious cross-platform launches in the series’ history. For now, the focus remains clear: digging deeper into character personalities and ensuring that the gameplay reflects the individual strengths and weaknesses of the playable cast, moving beyond the monolithic ‘protagonist’ feel of some previous entries.
