DJI Osmo Pocket 4 pushes the 1-inch sensor into a pocket-sized gimbal

A leap in glass and silicon

For years, the DJI Osmo Pocket series has occupied a strange, successful niche: the bridge between the shaky versatility of a smartphone and the cumbersome precision of a mirrorless rig. With the launch of the Osmo Pocket 4, DJI is effectively ending the compromise on image quality by stuffing a 1-inch CMOS sensor into its signature handheld form factor.

The shift to a larger sensor is the headline here. In previous iterations, the Pocket series excelled at stabilization but struggled in low-light environments, often producing the grainy, muddy shadows typical of small sensors. By moving to a 1-inch chip, DJI is targeting the ‘prosumer’ gap, offering a dynamic range and natural bokeh that should theoretically compete with high-end compacts like the Sony ZV series, while maintaining the mechanical gimbal that electronic stabilization (EIS) simply cannot replicate.

    The hardware shift

Beyond the sensor, the gimbal mechanism has been recalibrated for tighter tolerances. While the Pocket 3 was lauded for its smoothness, the Pocket 4 addresses the slight ‘micro-jitters’ some users reported during fast pans. The AI-powered tracking has also seen a bump, with a new iteration of ActiveTrack that is designed to maintain lock on subjects even in crowded urban environments, reducing the likelihood of the camera snapping to a background passerby.

One of the most significant additions isn’t actually the camera itself, but the integration of the DJI Mic 3. Included in the Creator Combo, the new transmitter is smaller and offers improved noise cancellation, addressing the perennial vlogging struggle: getting clean audio without carrying a separate field recorder.

    Pricing and bundle strategies

DJI is sticking to its tiered pricing model to attract both casual TikTokers and professional freelancers. In the European market, the Standard Combo enters at €499. However, the real value proposition lies in the Creator Combo at €619. This bundle isn’t just about accessories; it includes the DJI Mic 3 Transmitter, a dedicated fill light, a wide-angle lens attachment, and the Osmo Mini tripod.

The inclusion of the wide-angle lens is particularly critical. Because the 1-inch sensor changes the focal length and field of view, the native lens can sometimes feel too tight for ‘arm’s length’ vlogging. The wide-angle attachment restores that necessary breathing room for creators who don’t want their footage to feel claustrophobic.

    Positioning against the competition

The Osmo Pocket 4 puts DJI in a direct collision course with the Insta360 X series and the Sony ZV-1 II. While Insta360 leans into the ‘invisible’ selfie stick and 360-degree capture, DJI is doubling down on traditional cinematography. The goal here is clearly image fidelity over gimmicks.

The challenge for DJI will be thermal management. Larger sensors generate more heat, especially when pushing 4K at high bitrates. While DJI hasn’t released exhaustive stress-test data, the increased sensor size inevitably puts more pressure on the device’s passive cooling capabilities during long recording sessions in warm climates.
