    Escalation in the Levant

Tensions in the Middle East spiked Sunday night as Iran launched a series of ballistic missile strikes against Israel, specifically targeting the Ramat David airbase. The assault, confirmed by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), comes as a direct response to ongoing Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut, an area known as Dahiyeh.

The Israeli army reported that sirens were triggered across multiple regions starting around 10 p.m. local time. In a series of updates via Telegram, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claimed a high interception rate, stating they had neutralized all incoming missiles before they could reach their targets. The Home Front Command eventually cleared residents to leave shelters approximately one hour after the initial alerts.

The Strategic Trigger: Beirut and the Ceasefire

The IRGC framed the operation not as a random escalation, but as a measured warning. In a statement circulated by Iranian media, the corps linked the strikes to the “widespread killing and displacement” in the Tyre and Nabatieh regions of southern Lebanon. The catalyst appears to be a series of Israeli strikes on Dahiyeh on Sunday afternoon, which killed at least two people and injured 11 others in a densely populated civilian neighborhood.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz maintained that the strikes were surgical, targeting a Hezbollah command center. However, the Khatam al-Anbiya headquarters of the IRGC asserted that Israel had “crossed all red lines,” arguing that the continued aggression violated the spirit of the ceasefire agreed upon earlier this week in Washington, D.C.

Mohsen Rezaee, the military adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, emphasized the deterrent nature of the attack via X, stating that the “aggressors received their response” and warning that any further violations of the ceasefire would meet a “more crushing response and heavier costs.” This sentiment was echoed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who suggested that Tehran is prepared to move beyond diplomatic negotiations toward direct confrontation if the ceasefire is ignored.

    Trump’s Intervention and Diplomatic Friction

The geopolitical calculus shifted rapidly when U.S. President Donald Trump intervened, signaling a desire to decouple the two nations from a full-scale war. Speaking to Channel 12’s Barak Ravid, Trump stated he intended to call Prime Minister Netanyahu immediately to urge against a retaliatory strike.

“The Iranian strikes didn’t hurt anybody. Hopefully, Israel is not going to retaliate,” Trump told Ravid, framing the current exchange as a completed cycle of “fun” where both sides had their strike. Trump’s urgency stems from an ongoing, undisclosed effort to finalize a deal with Iran, which he described as being “very close.” He cautioned that a retaliatory strike from Israel could collapse these negotiations and perpetuate a cycle of violence that has lasted for decades.

    A Fragile Military Balance

While the IDF had initially signaled a “forceful response” to the Iranian barrage, the U.S. administration’s hesitation to provide full support for further escalation creates a complex dilemma for the Israeli cabinet. Reports from senior U.S. officials suggest a reluctance to be drawn into a new phase of escalation, with some sources telling Ravid, “we’re not in this.”

The human cost of the conflict continues to climb, with reports indicating that Israeli attacks have killed more than 3,500 people in Lebanon since March 2. As the IRGC threatens a broader scope of attacks encompassing “all American-Zionist targets in the region,” the stability of the Washington-brokered ceasefire remains precarious.
