The Mid-Range Muscle: TUF 16 Gets an RTX 50-Series Boost

Asus has traditionally positioned its TUF Gaming line as the rugged, pragmatic alternative to the flashier ROG series. At Computex 2026, the company leaned further into this identity with the unveiling of the new TUF 16. While the chassis remains focused on durability—retaining its MIL-STD-810H military-grade certification—the internals have received a significant bump that targets the competitive mid-range gaming market.

The standout specification is the integration of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 GPU. With a Total Graphics Power (TGP) of 85W, the 5070 is designed to balance performance and thermal efficiency in a 16-inch frame. More importantly, the laptop supports DLSS 4 frame generation, a feature that is becoming critical for maintaining high refresh rates in demanding AAA titles without overheating the chassis.

Under the hood, the TUF 16 is powered by the Intel Core i7 14650HX. This is a heavy-lifting chip featuring a hybrid architecture of eight performance cores and eight efficiency cores, peaking at 5.2GHz. For users who prioritize longevity and upgrades, Asus has included two RAM and two SSD slots, allowing for configurations up to 64GB of DDR5 RAM and 2TB of PCIe 4.0 storage. This openness to hardware expansion remains a key selling point for the TUF line compared to the increasingly soldered components found in thinner ultrabooks.

    Taming the Heat

Pushing a 50-series GPU and an HX-class processor in a mid-range chassis creates a significant thermal challenge. Asus is attempting to solve this with a revamped cooling solution comprising three heat pipes and a dual 80-blade fan system. The company claims that even in ‘Turbo Mode,’ acoustic noise is kept under 40dB—a figure that, if accurate, would place the TUF 16 among the quieter options in its class.

Connectivity has also been modernized. The rear I/O includes the necessary RJ45 Ethernet port for lag-free gaming, alongside multiple HDMI ports. On the sides, users get three USB Type-A ports and a USB Type-C port that supports DisplayPort 2, ensuring the laptop can drive high-resolution external monitors without bandwidth bottlenecks.

The Professional Pivot: ExpertBook B5 Flip G2

Alongside the gaming hardware, Asus introduced the ExpertBook B5 Flip G2, a 2-in-1 business machine designed for the hybrid workforce. Clad in an aluminum ‘Gentle Gray’ chassis, the B5 Flip G2 emphasizes portability, weighing in at just 1.34kg with a thickness of 14.9mm. It also carries the MIL-STD 810H certification, suggesting it can survive the knocks of frequent travel.

The B5 Flip G2 is built around the Intel Core 7 Series 3 processor, which marks a shift toward AI-integrated computing. The inclusion of an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) capable of up to 18 TOPS suggests that Asus is optimizing this machine for local AI tasks—such as noise cancellation and smart background blurring during video calls—without draining the 63Wh battery.

The device features a 360-degree hinge and a touchscreen, supported by a stylus that Asus claims can be charged to 60 minutes of use in just 15 seconds. In terms of connectivity, the B5 Flip G2 is well-equipped for the modern office, boasting two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.1 port, and Wi-Fi 7 support, which promises lower latency and higher speeds in congested corporate environments.

As of the Computex reveal, Asus has not yet announced specific pricing or regional availability for either the TUF 16 or the ExpertBook B5 Flip G2, though industry trends suggest a late Q3 or early Q4 release window.
