OnePlus is bringing a compact OLED tablet to India, potentially mirroring Oppo’s mini slate

A Shift Toward Small-Form Factor Tablets
For the last few cycles, the tablet market has been obsessed with scale. From the massive footprints of the iPad Pro to the 13.2-inch 3.4K LCD panel found on the recently launched OnePlus Pad 4, the industry has leaned into the ‘laptop replacement’ narrative. However, a new leak suggests OnePlus is preparing to pivot toward a different kind of utility: the compact, high-performance handheld.
According to industry tipster Abhishek Yadav (@yabhishekhd), OnePlus is planning to introduce a new member to its Pad family in India. Unlike the flagship Pad 4 or the budget-oriented Pad Go 2, this upcoming device is rumored to feature a compact OLED display, marking a significant departure in screen technology for the brand’s tablet lineup.
The Oppo Connection and Hardware Specs
The most striking detail of the leak isn’t just the screen, but the hardware identity of the device. The specifications shared by Yadav are virtually identical to those of the Oppo Pad Mini. Given that OnePlus and Oppo share a deep corporate parentage and often cross-pollinate hardware designs—a trend seen across their smartphone portfolios—it is highly probable that this is a rebranded version of the Mini for the Indian market.
The purported device is expected to sport an 8.8-inch OLED panel. This size is a strategic ‘sweet spot,’ bridging the gap between a large smartphone and a full-sized tablet, making it an ideal candidate for gaming and digital reading. To match the quality of the OLED, the display is rumored to support a 144Hz refresh rate, ensuring fluidity that exceeds standard 60Hz or 90Hz tablets in this size category.
Performance and the Android 16 Question
Under the hood, the leaks point to a powerhouse configuration. The tablet is said to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset. While the Gen 5 represents the bleeding edge of mobile silicon, its inclusion in a compact tablet would position this device as a ‘gaming slate’ rather than a mere media consumption tool. This would be paired with LPDDR5x RAM and UFS 4.1 storage, the current industry standards for high-end Android devices.
Perhaps the most surprising claim is the software. The leak suggests the device will ship with Android 16 in India. If accurate, this would make it one of the first devices to launch with the next generation of Google’s OS, though it’s more likely the device will be optimized for Android 16 during its development cycle and launch with a stable build as the OS rolls out globally.
Filling a Market Gap
The move toward a compact OLED tablet addresses a glaring void in the current Indian market. While Samsung offers the high-end Tab S series, their smaller offerings often lack the raw power of the ‘Ultra’ models. By deploying a Snapdragon 8 series chip in an 8.8-inch frame, OnePlus would be targeting power users who find 13-inch tablets too cumbersome for handheld use but find smartphones too restrictive for productivity or intensive gaming.
Whether this device will be marketed as a ‘Mini’ or a distinct sub-brand remains to be seen. However, the transition from the LCD panels of the Pad 4 and Pad Go 2 to OLED signals that OnePlus is finally prioritizing contrast and color accuracy for its portable slate ecosystem.
