A shift toward the small-screen flagship
For most of the last two years, the tablet market has been a battle of giants. OnePlus leaned into this trend with the OnePlus Pad 4, featuring a sprawling 13.2-inch 3.4K LCD designed for productivity and media consumption. But as the market saturates with oversized slabs, there is a growing demand for ‘mini’ tablets—devices that fit in one hand but don’t sacrifice flagship power.
According to a recent leak from tipster Abhishek Yadav (@yabhishekhd), OnePlus is preparing to pivot. The company is reportedly planning the launch of a new, compact member of the Pad series in India, distinguished by a move away from LCD in favor of a high-density OLED panel.
The Oppo connection
The most striking detail of the leak is how closely the rumored device mirrors the Oppo Pad Mini. While OnePlus and Oppo share a parent company (BBK Electronics) and frequently swap hardware blueprints, the similarities here are almost identical. If the leak holds, the upcoming OnePlus tablet will feature an 8.8-inch OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate.
The shift to OLED is a critical strategic move. While the Pad 4’s LCD is capable, OLED allows for true blacks and significantly better contrast, making it more appealing for gaming and HDR content—the primary use cases for a smaller form factor. By adopting an 8.8-inch footprint, OnePlus is positioning itself against the iPad Mini, a segment that has remained largely unchallenged by Android manufacturers in the high-end space for several years.
Under the hood: A jump to Gen 5?
If the technical specifications shared by Yadav are accurate, the internals are surprisingly aggressive. The tablet is rumored to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. While this chipset represents the bleeding edge of mobile processing, its inclusion in a compact tablet suggests OnePlus isn’t looking to create a ‘lite’ version of their tablet, but rather a ‘power-user’ handheld.
The hardware stack is rounded out with LPDDR5x RAM and UFS 4.1 storage, ensuring that the device can handle heavy multitasking and high-fidelity gaming without bottlenecks. Perhaps most surprising is the mention of Android 16. While the industry is currently navigating the transition to Android 15, the inclusion of a later version suggests this device may be a long-term project or a strategic launch timed for a software cycle shift in 2025.
Filling the portfolio gap
OnePlus has previously attempted to cover the mid-range market with the OnePlus Pad Go 2, but that device remained a budget-friendly LCD offering. There has been a glaring hole in the portfolio: a premium, small-screen tablet for users who find the 13-inch models too cumbersome for reading or handheld gaming.
By launching a compact OLED device, OnePlus can effectively segment its audience. The Pad 4 remains the ‘laptop replacement’ for students and professionals, while the rumored mini-tablet targets the gaming community and those who prefer a more portable digital notebook. Whether this is a direct rebrand of the Oppo Pad Mini or a slightly tweaked regional variant, the move signals that OnePlus is finally acknowledging that bigger isn’t always better in the tablet world.
