    At the center of the controversy is a two-year extramarital affair between the judge and a high-ranking law enforcement officer. While the relationship itself is a matter of personal conduct, the venue of the encounter transformed it into a matter of official misconduct. According to the committee’s decision, the pair engaged in sexual activity within the judge’s chambers during business hours, often within earshot of the very staff tasked with supporting the court’s operations.

    The Forensic Trail

    The investigation into the allegations was notably granular, moving beyond witness testimony into a level of physical evidence rarely seen in judicial disciplinary proceedings. After the judge dismissed the initial claims as “outrageous” and “baseless,” a special committee was convened to verify the accounts of six former law clerks.

    The Price of Deception

    The disciplinary measures were exacerbated by the judge’s initial response to the probe. The decision reveals that the judge made false statements to Chief Circuit Judge William Pryor and the chief district judge, specifically denying that sexual intercourse had occurred in the courthouse and claiming they did not know who the allegations concerned.

    Despite these falsehoods, the committee opted against more severe sanctions, such as removal from the bench. The decision cited the judge’s eventual candor, their otherwise “exemplary service” to the court, and the fact that the relationship had ended. The agreed-upon sanctions include:
