A Pivot from Meditation to Personalized AI
The founders of Mental, a mental health app tailored for men, noticed a specific trend in their user data: interactive AI audio features were seeing an overwhelming level of engagement. For CEO Anson Whitmer and co-founder Tyler Sheaffer, this wasn’t just a feature success—it was a signal that the market was desperate for a scalable, personalized form of psychological support.
That realization has culminated in the launch of The Path, an AI-driven therapy and coaching platform that has already secured $14.3 million in seed funding. The round was led by Prime Movers Lab, with contributions from high-profile investors including boxer Deontay Wilder, speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno, and Designer Fund.
The project gained significant momentum when motivational speaker and author Tony Robbins entered the fold. Originally brought in as an advisor to help with branding, Robbins’ influence grew until he was named a co-founder. The app now blends clinical psychology with Robbins’ well-known self-improvement methodologies, positioning itself as a hybrid between traditional therapy and high-performance coaching.
The Problem with ‘Engagement-First’ Chatbots
For Whitmer, the drive toward AI mental health is deeply personal. A PhD in psychology and a former early employee at the meditation giant Calm, Whitmer’s career shift was spurred by the loss of two family members to suicide. While he viewed Calm as a successful first step in democratizing mental health tools, he argues that meditation alone is often insufficient for the idiosyncratic, deeply personal struggles individuals face.
The current gap in the market is being filled by consumer LLMs. OpenAI has indicated that hundreds of thousands of users turn to ChatGPT for mental health queries every week. However, Whitmer contends that using a general-purpose chatbot for therapy is fundamentally flawed.
“Consumer chatbots are optimized for engagement,” Whitmer explains. In the world of social media and general AI, success is measured by how quickly a problem is solved or how long a user stays on the platform. This often leads to “reinforcement,” where the AI simply agrees with the user to keep the interaction pleasant. In a therapeutic context, this is counterproductive. Effective therapy requires a practitioner to challenge the user, dig into underlying assumptions, and guide the individual toward discovering their own solutions rather than providing a quick, surface-level fix.
Safety Benchmarks and Technical Architecture
To differentiate itself from “GPT wrappers,” The Path has developed its own model, post-trained from open-source architectures. This allows the team to steer the AI away from the agreeable, subservient tone of consumer bots and toward a more structured, challenging clinical approach.
The company is leaning heavily on data to prove its safety. According to Whitmer, The Path’s model scored a 95 on the Vera-MH mental health safety AI benchmark. To put that in perspective, the top-performing general consumer chatbots reportedly scored around 65. By prioritizing safety and clinical structure over conversational fluency, the startup hopes to provide a tool that can actually facilitate resolution rather than just looping in an endless cycle of validation.
Accessibility and Market Entry
The Path allows users to select from 11 different virtual AI therapists, with the ability to customize the AI’s level of directness and personality. This customization is intended to mimic the “fit” a patient looks for when selecting a human therapist—a critical component of successful clinical outcomes.
Currently, the app is available for free as it works to build a user base and refine its models. Once the platform reaches maturity, the company plans to pivot to a subscription model, with a target price of $40 per month. While this is significantly cheaper than a traditional licensed therapist, it positions The Path as a premium service within the burgeoning “AI health” vertical.
