A nostalgic play for the big screen

Amazon MGM Studios is leaning heavily into the visceral appeal of the 1980s as it rolls out the final trailer for Masters of the Universe. The new footage isn’t just a preview of the plot; it’s a targeted exercise in nostalgia, weaving together original vintage clips from the classic animated series with the high-fidelity spectacle of modern cinema.

Directed by Travis Knight—who previously steered Bumblebee and Kubo and the Two Strings—the film serves as a comprehensive reboot of the sprawling Mattel franchise. It attempts to synthesize the core elements of the original He-Man series and its She-Ra: Princess of Power spinoff into a cohesive live-action narrative that appeals to both legacy fans and a new generation of viewers.

From office drone to the most powerful man in the universe

The narrative arc, teased across several trailers since January, frames Prince Adam (played by Nicholas Galitzine) as a displaced royal. After crash-landing on Earth at age ten to escape the onslaught of Skeletor, Adam grew up as an office drone with a deep-seated obsession with nerd culture and a lingering belief in his own extraterrestrial origins. The catalyst for the plot is the Sword of Power, which eventually guides Adam back to his ancestral home of Eternia.

Upon his return, Adam finds Eternia shattered and under the iron fist of Skeletor, portrayed by Jared Leto. The stakes are personal and planetary; to reclaim his world, Adam must evolve from a reluctant exile into the legendary He-Man. He is supported by a redesigned ensemble including Camila Mendes as Teela and Idris Elba as Duncan, also known as Man-At-Arms.

A sprawling ensemble and deep-cut cameos

The scale of the production is evident in its casting, which reads like a checklist of the franchise’s most iconic characters. Beyond the central trio, the film integrates several fan-favorite figures from the original toy lines and cartoons. Alison Brie takes on the role of Professor Evelyn Powers (Evil-Lyn), while Morena Baccarin portrays the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull.

The trailer also provides brief but significant glimpses of the “muscle” of Eternia. Fans can spot Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Fisto, Jon Xue Zhang as Ram-Man, and James Wilkinson as Mekaneck. Even the more eccentric corners of the universe are covered, with Kristen Wiig voicing Roboto and Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson appearing as Goat Man.

    The emotional hook

While earlier trailers focused on the origin story and the world-building of Eternia, this final cut prioritizes the emotional payoff. The sequence culminates in the iconic transformation, with Adam finally grasping the sword and uttering the franchise’s most famous line: “I have the power!”

This moment is juxtaposed against the menacing ambition of Leto’s Skeletor, who declares his intent to move beyond being a mere “devil” to becoming a god. The tension between Adam’s discovery of his destiny and Skeletor’s consolidation of power sets the stage for the film’s climax.

Masters of the Universe is scheduled to hit theaters on June 5, 2026.
